CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The deep depression formed over the Bay of Bengal has crossed the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coast. According to the India Meteorological Department, the system moved inland between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur, close to the southwest of Kalingapatnam.
Under its influence, heavy to very heavy rain accompanied by strong winds is being reported in several parts of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. In many districts of Odisha, the possibility of waterlogging, flooding and landslides remains due to heavy rainfall. A red alert had already been issued for several districts, including Koraput, Malkangiri, Kalahandi and Nabarangpur. The administration kept relief and rescue teams ready in vulnerable areas and made arrangements to move people to safer places.
According to the Meteorological Department, after crossing the coast, the system may remain a deep depression for about the next 12 hours. It is then expected to weaken gradually. However, rain is likely to continue in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh under its influence.
It may be noted that ‘Arnab’ was not the official name of this system, as the Meteorological Department recorded it as a deep depression rather than a cyclonic storm. ‘Arnab’ is a name included in the list of cyclone names designated for the Bay of Bengal.
