CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi. Air pollution in Delhi has increased again after four days of relief. On Wednesday, 28 October, the capital’s average Air Quality Index (AQI) rose to 229, which falls in the “poor” category. A day earlier, on Tuesday, the AQI was 197 and the air had remained in the moderate category. According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, concern among people has risen again as pollution levels increased in several areas of the capital.

The situation was the worst in Delhi’s Vivek Vihar, where the AQI was recorded at 316. This falls in the “very poor” category. Of the capital’s 58 monitoring stations, air quality was recorded in the poor category at 41 centres, while it remained moderate at 16 centres. Under CPCB standards, an AQI between 201 and 300 is considered poor, and between 301 and 400 very poor.

Slow wind speed and the inability of pollutant particles in the atmosphere to disperse adequately are being considered the main reasons behind the rise in pollution. According to the forecast of Delhi’s air quality early warning system, the air may remain in the moderate category between 29 and 31 October. However, during the next six days, air quality is feared to remain between the moderate and poor categories.

The transport sector had the highest share in pollution. According to available assessments, the transport sector contributed 19.3 percent to Delhi’s pollution on Wednesday. The energy sector, industry, domestic activities and construction also contributed to pollution. The estimated share of stubble burning was 0.9 percent. Meanwhile, on 27 October, 129 incidents of farm fires across six states were recorded through satellites.

The weather department has forecast cloudy skies and the possibility of rain on Thursday, while rain accompanied by thunder and lightning may occur on Friday. Rain and an increase in wind speed are expected to bring temporary relief from pollution. However, despite the change in weather, continuous monitoring of air quality in the capital will remain necessary.
