The Delhi government has begun the process of shifting Anganwadi centres operating from rented buildings to Municipal Corporation school campuses. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the initiative aims to provide Anganwadi centres with permanent spaces equipped with better facilities.
According to the government, Delhi has around 10,870 Anganwadi centres. Many of these centres are being run from rented buildings. Once they are allotted space on Municipal Corporation school campuses, children will be able to benefit from toilets, play areas and other available facilities. The plan also seeks to provide Anganwadi workers with better workplaces.
The Chief Minister said the government would work over the next two years to develop Anganwadi centres in better and permanent buildings. She also spoke about increasing the honorarium of Anganwadi workers, although the amount of the increase and the date of implementation have not yet been clarified.
Anganwadi workers play a role not only in child care and nutrition, but also in reaching pregnant women, conducting surveys, assisting vaccination drives and ensuring that benefits of government schemes reach needy families. The government has also announced plans to organise programmes in all Assembly constituencies to honour them and understand their problems.
