CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi: Air pollution levels in Delhi continue to raise concern. Air quality in several parts of the capital remains in the very poor category. On November 2, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in the ITO area reached 349. To control pollution, the administration has intensified vehicle checks and deployed special teams at Delhi’s borders.

Amid the decline in air quality, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) implemented the second stage of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in Delhi-NCR on November 2. Under this, directions have been issued to step up dust control, regular road cleaning, water sprinkling and action against polluting vehicles.

To reduce vehicular pollution, restrictions have also been tightened from November 1 on the entry into Delhi of petrol and diesel vehicles registered in other states. Under the prescribed rules, such vehicles below BS-VI standards are not allowed to enter Delhi. However, electric, CNG and BS-VI-compliant vehicles have been exempted. Valid Pollution Under Control Certificates (PUCC) are also being checked.

During checks at Delhi’s borders on November 2, traffic police in the northern range inspected 7,657 vehicles and sent back 609 vehicles that were not complying with the rules. The strict checks also led to traffic jams at borders connected to Delhi-Gurugram, Noida and Ghaziabad.

The administration has appealed to people to reduce the use of private vehicles, adopt public transport and carpooling, and keep their vehicle documents and pollution certificates in order.
