CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The death toll in the collapse of a four-storey building in Delhi’s New Seemapuri area has risen to four. The toll reached four after another body was recovered from the debris on Thursday morning. Eight people were injured in the incident and have been admitted to hospital. Relief and rescue operations are still under way.
The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon near Idgah Machhi Mandi. According to local officials, cracks had appeared in the building after tremors from an earthquake in Uttarakhand on Tuesday night. However, the administration has not yet identified the earthquake as the definite cause of the collapse, and an investigation into the actual cause of the incident is continuing.
After the incident, teams from the Delhi Fire Service, Delhi Police, NDRF, DDMA and MCD reached the spot. Debris is being cleared with the help of heavy machinery. Officials fear that one or two people may still be trapped under the rubble, so the rescue operation is being carried out continuously.
According to the MCD, the building was around 20-25 years old and was located in a densely populated area. The wall of a nearby mosque and the walls of another building were also damaged in the incident. Administrative teams are investigating the causes of the accident and the condition of the building.
