New Delhi: The municipal corporation has stepped up enforcement to control rising air pollution in the national capital, Delhi. As part of this campaign, 303 challans were issued in a single day on November 4 in the North-West Zone, the Rohini area. Significantly, these challans were not for traffic rule violations or vehicles, but against activities causing pollution.

The municipal corporation’s action focused on issues such as burning waste in the open, inadequate arrangements to control dust at construction sites, dumping debris in the open and dust accumulation on roads. In Rohini Zone, 160 challans were issued on November 2 and 199 on November 3. The number then rose to 303 on November 4.

Action was also taken in other areas. A total of 221 challans were issued in the Central North Zone, 210 in the West Zone, 155 in the South Zone and 147 in the South East Zone. Municipal corporation teams are monitoring during both day and night.

According to MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar, 48 pollution hotspots have been identified in the capital. Work is being carried out to address problems such as road dust, encroachments and traffic jams at these locations. At present, 66 mechanical road sweeping machines are in operation, and their working hours have been increased from eight to 12 hours. In addition, 125 teams have been deployed in two shifts to prevent open burning of waste.

The municipal corporation is also using water sprinkling, anti-smog guns and jetting machines. According to officials, monitoring and challan action against pollution-causing activities will continue.
