CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi. The Delhi government has declared 48 villages, including Bijwasan, Burari and Fatehpur Beri, as urban areas. Under a notification issued by Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on 23 October 2026, the entire revenue area of these villages, along with their old inhabited areas, has been included in the urban area.

The decision will open the way for planning development works in these areas and improving basic facilities. It will also allow works in these villages to be carried out through the development funds of MLAs and MPs.

Villages from seven districts are included in the notification issued by the Urban Development Department. The villages are from Outer North, North, North-West, North-East, South, South-West and South-East Delhi. They include Bakoli, Palla, Hamidpur, Mungeshpur, Jagatpur, Badarpur Majra-Burari, Fatehpur Beri, Chhawla, Ghumanhera, Bijwasan, Dhansa, Ghalibpur, Kair and Chak Chilla, among a total of 48 villages.

This is part of the urbanisation process for Delhi villages that had so far remained in the rural category. Urban status may help prepare plans for facilities such as roads, drainage, drinking water, sewerage, street lighting and waste management. It will give the agencies concerned a basis to assess development needs and coordinate projects.

However, getting urban status is not in itself a guarantee that development works will begin automatically. Separate project planning, budgets, administrative approvals and implementation will be required. Rules related to land use and construction will also continue to apply.

Shift from rural to urban administrative system

Of Delhi’s total 357 villages, 309 had already been declared urban areas. With the notification now issued to include the remaining 48 villages in the urban area, the urbanisation of the capital’s rural areas has moved forward. The government expects the change to help implement development plans in a structured manner and improve local civic facilities.
