CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi: Government agencies have claimed the deployment of about 1,200 personnel to control air pollution in the national capital, but despite this, dust rising from roads, construction material kept in the open and construction activity continuing amid restrictions are adding to concern. Despite claims of monitoring and action, pollution-control rules do not appear to be followed in several areas.

According to the Municipal Corporation, about 700 personnel are deployed in its 12 zones, while 500 personnel have been deployed by the Delhi government. Joint enforcement teams issued 914 challans on November 2 and imposed fines of about Rs 6.86 lakh. On November 3, fines of about Rs 6.12 lakh were recorded through 817 challans. Even so, construction debris is lying in the open at several places and dust is rising from roads. At some sites, green covers at construction locations have also been put up only as a formality.

Under the Delhi government’s winter action plan, a ban on dust-generating demolition and outdoor construction activities has been in force since November 1. There is also a provision for action in case of violation of the rules. Despite this, questions are being raised about the effectiveness of the monitoring system.

On the morning of Wednesday, November 4, according to the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Delhi’s average AQI was recorded at 369, which is in the very poor category. At Mandir Marg, the AQI reached 508, which falls in the severe category. In such conditions, merely deploying teams will not be enough; regular inspections, dust control and strict compliance with the rules must also be ensured.
