CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi. To strengthen public safety in Delhi and improve the city’s appearance, the Public Works Department (PWD) has launched a new initiative. Between 400 and 500 police booths will be built in vacant spaces under flyovers in the capital. The department will construct the booths from its own budget and, after completion, hand them over to Delhi Police. Alongside this, beautification work based on different themes is also being carried out at six major locations.

Public Works Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh inspected the work underway beneath the Chirag Delhi and IIT Delhi flyovers on October 29. He said unused spaces beneath flyovers are being made useful for public convenience and security. With the construction of police booths, police presence will increase at busy intersections and on key routes, making it easier for people to get assistance when needed.

Under the beautification plan, Indian Oil Corporation Limited has adopted five flyovers and a section of Aurobindo Marg. The company will develop these sites under corporate social responsibility (CSR) and maintain them for the next three years.

Under the plan, greenery, sculptures, wall paintings and pedestrian pathways are being developed beneath the Chirag Delhi flyover on a nature and wildlife theme. At the Panchsheel flyover, Indian classical dance will be showcased through modern art. A science and technology-related zone will be created beneath the IIT Delhi flyover. A yoga centre at Punjabi Bagh, an inter-transit hub at Mukarba Chowk and an attractive public space through colourful artworks on Aurobindo Marg will also be developed.

The government’s objective is to make better use of vacant and neglected spaces beneath flyovers, maintain cleanliness, and create safe and attractive public areas for citizens.
