CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Delhi High Court has strongly questioned the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) over its decision to declare celebrated wrestler Vinesh Phogat ineligible for domestic wrestling events. The court observed that sports bodies must ensure fairness and equal opportunity for athletes, especially those returning after personal or medical breaks. During the hearing, the bench reportedly criticized the federation’s approach and asked the Central Government to form an expert panel to examine the issue in detail.

The case has attracted national attention because Vinesh Phogat remains one of India’s most accomplished wrestlers and a leading face in women’s sports. Reports indicate that the WFI cited anti-doping regulations and mandatory return procedures as the basis for declaring her ineligible. However, the court emphasized that motherhood and temporary absence from sports should not become grounds for discrimination against athletes.

The High Court also directed authorities to ensure that deserving sportspersons are given a fair chance to participate in major competitions, including Asian Games selection trials. The development is being viewed as a significant moment in Indian sports governance and athlete rights.
