CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India ePress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Delhi High Court heard a matter concerning the temporary ban imposed on messaging platform Telegram, and asked the central government to file a detailed reply on the basis for the restriction and why it was necessary. The court said that while taking broad action against any digital platform, it is also necessary to consider the impact on its millions of legitimate users.
Appearing for the central government, counsel argued that some criminal gangs, cyber fraudsters and networks involved in examination-related malpractice were using Telegram. According to the government, strong measures were necessary during sensitive examinations to stop misinformation and illegal activities.
However, the court asked whether, instead of blocking the entire platform, targeted action could have been taken only against suspicious channels and accounts. The court has also sought clarification on the technical and legal aspects of the issue.
At the next hearing, the central government will have to submit a detailed report. The case is bringing to the fore important questions related to balancing regulation of digital platforms, cyber security and citizens’ online rights.
