The Delhi High Court, in a sensitive step towards a 10-year-old girl who survived rape, has directed that an encouraging message written by a woman judge of the trial court be delivered to the child. The court directed the District Legal Services Authority to print the message and hand it over to the girl or her family. It also asked that the prescribed compensation of Rs 10.50 lakh be made available to the family.
The case dates to 2023, when the girl was seven years old. Additional Sessions Judge Rajani Ranga of the Rohini court had convicted the accused and sentenced him to life imprisonment. While pronouncing the sentence, the judge also wrote a separate message addressed to the child, apart from the formal order. In the message, the judge praised the child’s courage and encouraged her to move ahead in life, go to school, spend time with friends, laugh, play and dream. The judge said the court would always remember her courage.
A bench of Justice Prathiba M. Singh and Justice Dinesh Bhatt of the Delhi High Court refused, for now, to stay the sentence awarded to the accused. The court considered the evidence available in the case, including forensic evidence. The matter will next be heard in November for a status report related to compensation.
