CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi. To strengthen women’s safety in Delhi, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced a plan to install 100,000 smart street lights and 50,000 new CCTV cameras. The Chief Minister shared the information on Tuesday during a programme at Daulat Ram College of Delhi University. She said the government is committed to protecting women’s safety, dignity and rights. The initiative aims to reduce dark spots in the city and strengthen surveillance arrangements in public places.
Smart lights to be linked to control centre According to the Chief Minister, the proposed smart street lights will be linked to a central control and command centre. This will help identify faulty lights and ensure their repair within the stipulated timeframe. The government’s aim is to improve lighting at locations where darkness may make people, especially women, feel unsafe.
Along with this, work is also under way on a plan to install 50,000 new CCTV cameras in Delhi. These cameras are expected to help expand the city’s surveillance system and strengthen public safety. However, the timeline for installing the cameras and lights, as well as detailed information on locations, has not yet been released.
Emphasis on changing attitudes for women’s safety Rekha Gupta said the responsibility for women’s safety should not be placed only on women, and that society as a whole needs to change its mindset. She stressed teaching boys and men to respect women instead of imposing restrictions on girls.
At the programme, students also demonstrated self-defence techniques. The Chief Minister encouraged the students to move forward with confidence, raise their voice against harassment and make their own decisions. She said the purpose of education is not only to obtain a degree, but also to prepare young people with practical skills and self-reliance.
