CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: Delhi jail officials posted for more than three years to be transferred
New Delhi: The government has taken a major step to curb corruption, extortion and administrative irregularities in Delhi’s jails. Officials posted in the same jail or at the same location for more than three years will now be identified and transferred immediately. The Delhi government has asked the jail administration to prepare a list of such officials and begin the transfer process.
The directions were issued after a high-level review meeting chaired by Home Minister Ashish Sood. The government has also sought complete details from the jail administration of officials posted in sensitive departments beyond the prescribed period. These include the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO), officials in the factory and purchase departments, and those posted in jails designated for first-time offenders, accused in economic offences and civil prisoners.
In addition, the posting records of the past 10 years have been sought for some officials facing allegations of corruption and misconduct. Through scrutiny of these records, their appointments and possible irregularities will be examined. However, an allegation against any official is not in itself proof of guilt.
The government has also directed checks on the quality of food and medicines provided to prisoners in jails. Emphasis has been placed on verifying their market value to prevent possible financial irregularities in the procurement process.
The adoption of modern scanning technology is also being considered to stop the smuggling of tobacco and narcotic substances into jails. Along with this, action-taken reports have been sought within a fixed timeframe on pending complaints related to security lapses and staff misconduct.
Home Minister Ashish Sood said the government has a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption, extortion and negligence in jail administration.
