The investigation has found that repair and construction-related work was underway in the building before the incident. Police are also probing what impact these works may have had on the structural strength of the building. Earlier, action had also been taken against other people, including members of the building owner’s family. The role of municipal corporation officials is also under the scope of the investigation, and several officials have been suspended.
The incident has raised serious questions over the safety arrangements of PG accommodations and student housing in Delhi. After the accident, demands have intensified for safety audits of PG buildings and stricter rules. The Delhi government is also working towards making licences, police clearance, and structural and fire safety certification mandatory for PGs and private student hostels.
