CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi: Discontent in Delhi Police over the transfer of officers came into the open. On Monday, November 2, a large number of police personnel demonstrated outside Police Headquarters, demanding that ACP Manasvi Vashishth and Shahdara police station SHO Inspector Arun Kumar be reinstated to their previous posts. Around 100 police personnel joined the protest initially, while later reports said nearly 500 personnel reached a meeting with the Police Commissioner.

The controversy began with a clash between police personnel and lawyers at Shahdara police station on October 23. In the incident, advocate Lalit Bansal suffered a serious head injury. Lawyers had alleged that advocates who reached the police station were misbehaved with and threatened. Police officials, in turn, also raised objections over the conduct of the lawyers and the events that took place inside the police station.

After the incident, lawyers in Delhi’s district courts began an indefinite strike. Subsequently, on October 28, ACP Manasvi Vashishth was transferred from the Gandhi Nagar sub-division to the Special Police Unit for Women and Children, and Inspector Arun Kumar was transferred from Shahdara police station to the Security Unit. After the transfers, the lawyers ended their strike, but resentment grew among a section of the police department.

The protesting police personnel met the Police Commissioner and demanded that their concerns be heard, a grievance redressal committee be formed, and a clear standard operating procedure (SOP) be prepared for dealing with dispute situations involving lawyers. They also raised the need for the safety of police personnel and better arrangements in court complexes.

Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar held an interaction meeting with senior officers and heard the grievances of the personnel. Meanwhile, reports also emerged on November 3 about the suspension of ACP Manasvi Vashishth. The entire sequence of events has raised questions over coordination between police and lawyers and the mechanism for resolving departmental grievances.
