CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Delhi: New Delhi. A case has come to light in Delhi in which a drug peddler was allegedly held hostage at a police station and ransom was demanded from his family. An FIR has been registered against a sub-inspector (SI) and a constable in the matter, while the station house officer (SHO) of the police station concerned has been sent to the lines.
According to a media report, the allegation is that the policemen took Rs 1 lakh from the detained drug peddler’s family in return for releasing him. After this, more money was allegedly demanded from them. Following the family’s complaint, the matter came to the notice of officers and an inquiry into the role of the policemen was started.
Along with the registration of a first information report against the SI and the constable, departmental-level action has been taken against the SHO concerned. Police are trying to ascertain who was involved in the alleged extortion and what sequence of events took place during the custody.
The incident has raised questions over the safety of people kept in police custody and the accountability of law enforcement officers. However, the registration of an FIR is not proof that the allegations have been established. The findings of the investigation and the responses of the parties concerned will clarify the position further. For now, further legal and departmental action will be taken on the basis of the investigation.
