CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi. The Delhi High Court has dismissed the appeals of five convicts and upheld their seven-year jail sentence in the case related to the death of 22-year-old Monish during the 2020 north-east Delhi riots.

Justice Madhu Jain, delivering the verdict on October 27, refused to interfere with the trial court’s order on conviction and sentence.

The case relates to February 25, 2020, when Monish was attacked by a mob during violence in the Chand Bagh and Brijpuri areas of north-east Delhi. According to the prosecution, Monish was chased, surrounded and assaulted. He was later taken to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, where he died. The post-mortem report found that death was caused by serious head injuries.

In the case, Aman Kashyap, Devendra Kumar, Pradeep Rai, Ashish alias Goli and Arun Kumar had challenged their conviction in the High Court. The accused raised issues including alleged contradictions in witness statements, delay in recording statements of police witnesses and the absence of a test identification parade.

The High Court did not accept these arguments. The court said the available evidence did not show that the role of the accused was limited merely to being present in the mob. According to the testimony of police personnel, they were at the front of an armed mob and were instigating others to attack Monish.

Upholding the trial court’s decision, the court dismissed the appeals of all five convicts.

The trial court had convicted the five in November 2024 and, in January 2025, sentenced them to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 30,000.
