Delhi roads choked before Diwali as illegal parking and crowds became major reasons

New Delhi: Ahead of Diwali, pressure on traffic management in the national capital Delhi is steadily increasing. Crowds thronging markets for shopping, illegal parking on roads and violations of traffic rules left vehicles stuck in jams for hours in several areas. Long queues were seen on the roads on Wednesday as well, and people took much longer than usual to reach their destinations.

The worst problems were reported in busy markets such as Sadar Bazaar and Karol Bagh. In Sadar Bazaar, parking of vehicles up to the footpath and encroachments on the route leading towards Qutub Road Chowk left little space for pedestrians. Traffic was also badly affected near Modi Mill and Kalkaji in South Delhi. According to motorists, more than 200 vehicles remained stuck in a jam there for about half an hour.

Apart from this, vehicle movement remained slow around Dwarka, East of Kailash, Inderlok, Pitampura, Keshavpuram and the Azadpur flyover. At several places, driving on the wrong side and haphazard roadside parking made the traffic jam situation more serious.

The disruption in traffic was caused not only by the festival rush, but also by restrictions imposed under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) for pollution control, which became an additional challenge. Movement was also affected at the Ghazipur border due to checks on non-BS-VI vehicles.

Motorists have demanded deployment of additional traffic police personnel at major intersections and strict action against illegal parking. During the festival period, people have been advised to use public transport and plan their travel after checking traffic conditions before going to markets.
