CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Delhi government has decided to close schools across the national capital after the implementation of GRAP-4 (Graded Response Action Plan – Stage 4) in view of severe air pollution levels. The move comes as air quality in Delhi and surrounding regions deteriorated sharply, reaching the ‘severe’ category and posing serious health risks, especially to children. Authorities stated that reducing exposure to polluted air is the primary reason behind the decision to suspend physical classes.
Under GRAP-4, strict measures are enforced, including restrictions on construction activities, curbs on vehicle movement, and shutdown of non-essential operations. Schools, being highly sensitive environments with young children, are among the first institutions affected during such emergency pollution controls. Online classes may be adopted by schools to ensure continuity of education during the closure period.
Health experts have repeatedly warned that prolonged exposure to hazardous air can lead to respiratory problems, eye irritation, and long-term health complications. Parents and educators have largely welcomed the decision, emphasizing the need to prioritize student safety over routine schedules. The Delhi government continues to monitor air quality levels closely and has urged residents to limit outdoor activities. Further decisions on reopening schools will depend on improvements in pollution levels in the coming days.
