CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi: In view of Diwali and the upcoming festivals, the campaign against adulteration in food items has been intensified in Delhi. As part of this, the Food Safety Department raided the khoya market at Mori Gate on Tuesday and seized and destroyed about 7,000 kilograms of unhygienic and foul-smelling khoya. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta reached the spot, inspected the action and directed officials to prevent suspicious food material from reaching the market.
During the drive, the Food Safety Department team collected 44 surveillance samples from the market. These were subjected to preliminary testing on the spot through the “Food Safety on Wheels” mobile testing facility. Of these, 35 samples did not meet the prescribed standards. In addition, two other samples have been sent to a laboratory for detailed examination.
Preliminary testing indicated the presence of milk powder, vanaspati and substances used for binding in the suspected khoya. However, their actual composition and quality will be confirmed by the laboratory’s final report.
This was the Food Safety Department’s fourth drive at the Mori Gate khoya market. Earlier, 2,830 kg of khoya was destroyed on September 4, 610 kg on September 8 and 520 kg on October 23. After the latest action, a total of 10,660 kg of khoya has so far been destroyed under this campaign.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said there would be no compromise of any kind with public health. She directed officials to continue regular inspections and take action according to the law against those involved in adulteration.
Amid rising demand for sweets and other food items during the festive season, the department said it has intensified monitoring of markets, dairy establishments and sweet manufacturers.
