The draft voter list was released in Delhi on August 31 after the SIR. Around 47.5 lakh names have been left out of the existing voter list. According to officials, a large number of these voters have been placed in categories such as absent or shifted.
Eligible voters whose names have been left out of the draft list have an opportunity to file claims for inclusion. The process of filing claims and objections will continue until September 30, 2026, while the final voter list is scheduled to be published on November 4, 2026.
According to election officials, notices are also being issued to voters included in the draft list whose details have discrepancies or whose information could not be linked with old records. It is stated that more than 33 lakh voters are likely to receive notices.
The purpose of the SIR process is to update the voter list and ensure the names of eligible voters. The claims and objections process gives voters an opportunity to get their records checked and correct any errors.
