Delhi’s student hubs are facing growing concerns over unsafe accommodation, as thousands of students pay high rents to live close to colleges and coaching centres. A recent building collapse in Satya Niketan has once again highlighted the risks faced by students living in congested residential areas.
In areas such as Laxmi Nagar, Shakarpur, West Angad Nagar, Mukherjee Nagar, Vijay Nagar and Guru Mandi, private accommodation has expanded rapidly around educational institutions. However, many buildings reportedly have cramped rooms, narrow staircases, poor ventilation, exposed electrical wires and inadequate fire-safety arrangements. Some students say they pay between Rs 10,000 and Rs 16,000 for double-sharing accommodation despite limited space and poor infrastructure.
The situation becomes more worrying because several properties operate as commercial paying-guest facilities inside residential buildings, raising questions about permissions and safety compliance. Narrow and damaged roads can also make it difficult for emergency services to reach these locations quickly. Previous incidents, including a coaching-centre fire in Mukherjee Nagar and a transformer fire in Laxmi Nagar, have demonstrated the dangers of such densely populated areas.
The situation highlights the urgent need for stronger inspections, fire-safety compliance and safer student accommodation across Delhi.
