CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: Delhi tightens pollution curbs for old vehicles, offices and construction

New Delhi. Several new restrictions have been implemented from November 1 to control air pollution that rises in the national capital Delhi during winter. Under the Delhi government’s winter action plan, rules have been tightened on the entry of old vehicles, construction activities, parking fees and employee attendance in government and private offices. These measures will remain in force according to different timelines until February 28, 2027.

Under the new system, petrol and diesel vehicles registered outside Delhi that do not meet BS-6 emission standards will not be allowed to enter the capital from November 1 until January 31, 2027. However, electric and CNG vehicles, along with ambulances, fire tenders and other notified essential-service vehicles, have been exempted.

Strictness has also been introduced over vehicle Pollution Under Control certificates (PUC). Fuel will not be available at petrol pumps if a valid certificate is not held. To monitor this arrangement, automated number plate recognition systems (ANPR) have been installed at 500 petrol pumps in Delhi.

From November 1 to January 31, government and private offices may call a maximum of 50 percent of employees to the office. The remaining employees will work from home. Office timings have also been changed to reduce traffic pressure. Municipal Corporation of Delhi offices will operate from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., while Delhi government offices will function from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Restrictions have also been imposed in the construction sector. From November 1 to January 31, outdoor construction and demolition activities that spread dust will remain banned. A wider ban on construction and demolition work will be enforced from December 10 to January 20, with exemptions for specified essential projects.

In addition, fees at authorised parking sites have been doubled. Delhi Metro parking has been exempted from this increase. Special enforcement teams, cameras and artificial intelligence-based monitoring systems have been deployed to ensure compliance with the rules.

The Delhi government says the purpose of these measures is to reduce the use of private vehicles, control dust and smoke emissions and promote public transport. The impact of these rules will depend on their compliance and coordination among various agencies.
