CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: AIIMS Bhopal, under the leadership of its Executive Director Prof. Ajay Singh, is consistently promoting inclusive and evidence-based healthcare services. The institute is particularly focused on addressing the needs of underserved and overlooked sections of society. In this context, AIIMS Bhopal has highlighted an extremely important yet often neglected public health issue: Postmenopausal Depression, which profoundly affects the mental health of women not just in India but globally.
Statistics reveal that approximately 28% of postmenopausal women worldwide suffer from depression. The situation is even more severe in developing countries like India. The symptoms of postmenopausal depression are often both physical and psychological, leading them to be misinterpreted as normal aging or menopausal symptoms. These symptoms include persistent sadness, irritability, hopelessness, loss of interest in life, low self-esteem, difficulty in decision-making, fatigue, changes in sleep and appetite, reduced libido, headaches, body pain, social withdrawal, guilt, and in severe cases, suicidal thoughts.
Treatment of postmenopausal depression should be tailored to the individual’s mental state, medical conditions, and personal preferences. In pharmacotherapy, SSRIs and SNRIs are considered first-line treatments for moderate to severe depression. In mild cases—especially when accompanied by other menopausal symptoms—Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) may be considered. Sometimes, a combination of antidepressants and hormone therapy proves effective.
Moreover, psychological and social interventions play a vital role in managing depression. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is especially effective for women facing social or familial challenges. Additional support through counseling, group therapy, mindfulness, yoga, and relaxation techniques can also help strengthen mental well-being.
Shedding light on this serious issue, Prof. Ajay Singh remarked:
“Postmenopausal depression is not just a mental condition—it is a multidimensional challenge that affects women’s self-esteem, functionality, and overall health. At AIIMS Bhopal, we aim to raise widespread awareness, promote early screening, and provide comprehensive care and support to postmenopausal women.”
