CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The love story of Hindi cinema’s evergreen actor Dev Anand and actor-singer Suraiya is still counted among the film world’s much-discussed unfinished romances. The two worked together in several films, and it was during this period that they grew close. It is said that during the shooting of a song for the film “Vidya”, Suraiya slipped from a boat and fell into the water. Dev Anand was a good swimmer, and he immediately jumped into the water and saved Suraiya. After this incident, their love deepened further. Suraiya later described the incident as an important moment in her life.
Dev Anand had expressed his wish to marry Suraiya. He had also proposed marriage to her and given her a ring. But Suraiya’s family, especially her grandmother, opposed the relationship. The two belonged to different religions, and because of family opposition, the relationship could not lead to marriage.
Years later, Dev Anand recalled the relationship in an interview and said he had wanted to marry Suraiya. He said that when he could not marry her, “I cried for the first time.” Dev Anand later married Kalpana Kartik, while Suraiya never married.
