CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Indian Railways: The Crouching Tiger of India’s Growth Story

Indian Railways, often referred to as the “Crouching Tiger” of India’s growth story, has achieved historic progress over the past decade (2014-2024), emerging as one of the world’s fastest-growing railway networks. This advancement has not only enhanced connectivity but has also played a crucial role in realizing India’s ambitious $5 trillion economy vision.

Rapidly Expanding Infrastructure

Between 2014 and 2024, Indian Railways laid 31,000 kilometers of new tracks, which is twice the 14,900 kilometers laid between 2004-2014. Freight transportation witnessed a 50% increase, pushing the railway’s revenue to ₹18.56 lakh crore. Additionally, electrification expanded from 5,188 km to 44,000 km, significantly reducing the carbon footprint.

Innovation in Transport and High-Speed Expansion

Indian Railways is set to launch its first train service to Srinagar, where some of the world’s highest bridges and longest tunnels have been constructed. The railway network is moving towards 100% electrification, reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

India is now gearing up to operate the world’s most powerful hydrogen trains. The development of these engines is being compared to Operation Smiling Buddha, which established India as a nuclear power. Furthermore, Indian Railways is advancing towards the commercial operation of Hyperloop technology, positioning the country as a global leader in future transport innovation.

Global Expansion and Economic Impact

Indian Railways is strengthening its presence not just domestically but also on a global scale. The railway has outlined strategic connections:

BBIN Initiative: Strengthening ties with South Asia

Act East Policy: Connecting with ASEAN nations

IMEC Initiative: Linking India with Europe

Additionally, India, in collaboration with Japan, is accelerating the Bullet Train project, further modernizing its railway network.

The Journey of Transformation Continues

Today, Indian Railways has joined the ranks of the world’s most modern railway networks. With the “Developed Rail – Developed India” vision, it is preparing for another transformational phase by 2047, aiming to become an inspiring symbol of railway development at both national and global levels.
