CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Experienced players Sophie Devine, Amelia Kerr, and Lea Tahuhu have returned to the New Zealand women’s cricket team for the three-match T20 series against Australia, starting on March 21.

Meanwhile, after a 1-1 draw in the recently concluded T20 series against Sri Lanka, Suzie Bates will continue as the interim captain. Wicketkeeper-batter Isabella Gaze remains sidelined due to a hip flexor injury.

All-rounder Sophie Devine took a break from international and domestic cricket in January to prioritize her mental and physical well-being. During this time, she missed the Dream11 Super Smash, Women’s Premier League, and the series against Sri Lanka. Now, she is set to make her return to the national team.

Amelia Kerr, who was part of the Mumbai Indians’ title-winning squad in the Women’s Premier League, has also rejoined the team. She last represented New Zealand in the T20 World Cup 2024 final against South Africa. Fast bowler Lea Tahuhu has returned after recovering from a hamstring injury sustained in December.

Bella James and Polly Inglis have been included in the squad, while Emma McLeod, Izzy Sharp, Flora Devonshire, and Brie Illing have been left out.

Expressing his excitement over the return of the experienced trio, New Zealand women’s team head coach Ben Sawyer said:

“We are thrilled to have Sophie, Meli, and Lea back in the squad. These three players bring an excellent mix of experience and leadership. Sophie took some time off from the game, but now she is fully prepared. She is a huge asset to any team, and we are delighted to have her back for this competitive series.”

The women’s T20 series will be played as a double-header alongside the ongoing five-match T20 series between New Zealand men’s team and Pakistan. The men’s series currently sees the hosts leading 2-0.

The three matches will take place in Auckland, Tauranga, and Wellington.
