Dhanteras gridlock in Delhi: vehicles crawl from Anand Vihar to Ghazipur

New Delhi: On Friday, Dhanteras, heavy vehicular pressure on Delhi’s roads led to severe traffic jams in several areas. Long queues of vehicles began appearing around Anand Vihar and Ghazipur from around 5 a.m. The situation was such that vehicles were seen crawling on several major routes. Festival shopping and the rush of passengers travelling to other states increased pressure on the traffic system.

Anand Vihar and the surrounding area were the worst affected by the rush. Movement of passengers increased around the railway station, the interstate bus terminal and the Kaushambi bus stand. Due to the large number of people travelling to Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand, queues of buses, private vehicles and autos formed on the roads. Traffic was also affected at the Ghazipur roundabout and on nearby routes.

Delhi Traffic Police has implemented special traffic arrangements from 5 to 15 November to control crowds during the festivals. Vehicular movement is expected to be affected on Road No. 56, or Chaudhary Charan Singh Marg, and Road No. 57, or Swami Dayanand Marg. Diversions have also been put in place near the Ghazipur roundabout and Ramprastha-Vivek Vihar.

Traffic police have advised motorists heading towards NH-24, Sarai Kale Khan and Barapullah to use the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway via GT Road. Parking and stopping of vehicles have been prohibited on designated roads around Anand Vihar ISBT.

Police have appealed to people to plan their travel in advance, avoid going to the Anand Vihar area unnecessarily and use public transport if possible.
