New Delhi: The rush to return home ahead of Dhanteras and Diwali affected traffic arrangements on Delhi’s roads. Heavy congestion was seen in several parts of the capital on Friday. The worst situation was around the Anand Vihar bus terminal in east Delhi, where long queues of buses formed. Passengers travelling in buses and other motorists remained stuck in traffic for hours. Travellers hoping to reach home for the festival faced considerable difficulty.
Anand Vihar bus terminal is a major transport hub for passengers travelling to Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand. With Diwali holidays beginning in Delhi-NCR, a large number of people are leaving for their home towns. Increased movement of private and public buses around the bus terminal put heavy pressure on the roads.
Vehicle restrictions related to pollution control in Delhi are also being cited as one reason for the congestion. Due to the ban on entry of vehicles below BS-6 norms, queues of vehicles formed during checks in border areas. In addition, crowds that gathered in markets for Dhanteras shopping also increased traffic pressure.
Delhi Traffic Police has implemented special traffic arrangements from November 5 to 15 at Anand Vihar ISBT and nearby transport hubs during the festivals. Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes, avoid unauthorised parking and plan their travel in advance.
Amid the festive rush, passengers have called for better traffic management at bus terminals and on major roads, as well as the deployment of additional police personnel.
