Crowds thronged markets on Dhanteras, causing traffic jams in Delhi-NCR.

CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India Epress / ITDC News / Agencies, Bhopal:

On Dhanteras evening, heavy traffic jams were seen on roads across Delhi-NCR because of shopping and festival preparations. On Friday, 6 November, long queues of vehicles formed on several major routes in Delhi, Noida and Gurugram. Traffic was also affected on roads leading to markets and around railway stations and bus stands. The situation was such that in many places it took nearly half an hour to cover a distance of five kilometres.

Vehicles moved slowly in major areas such as Connaught Place, Khan Market, Nizamuddin, Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazaar, Lajpat Nagar and Sarojini Nagar because of the rush of shoppers. Jam-like conditions also persisted around ITO, Anand Vihar, Sarai Kale Khan and New Delhi Railway Station. The movement of passengers heading to their home towns for Diwali and Chhath added to the difficulties.

The traffic jams also affected cab services. Apps such as Ola and Rapido showed higher fares than on normal days. According to a report, around 7 pm, the starting fare for an Ola priority cab from Noida Film City to Delhi airport had reached ₹868. Around 9 pm, the fare on the same route came down to about ₹553. Fluctuations were also seen in cab fares from Noida to railway stations and bus stands.

Traffic police deployed additional personnel on major routes and also used cranes to remove wrongly parked vehicles. During the festival period, people were advised to leave home with extra time in hand.
