CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: Dhruv Tripathi leads in Gorakhpur MLC race, Rajiv Yadav close
Gorakhpur. A close contest was seen between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Dhruv Kumar Tripathi and independent candidate Rajiv Yadav during the counting of votes for the Gorakhpur-Faizabad division teachers’ Legislative Council (MLC) election in Uttar Pradesh. After the counting of first-preference votes was completed, Dhruv Tripathi was maintaining a lead, while Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate Dr. Sanjayan Tripathi remained in third place.
According to the available figures, Dhruv Kumar Tripathi received 11,881 votes, while Rajiv Yadav secured 11,415 votes. The margin between the two was 466 votes. SP candidate Dr. Sanjayan Tripathi received 8,301 votes. Even after the first-preference votes, further counting remained important for the completion of the election process.
During the counting, Dr. Sanjayan Tripathi raised questions over the process. He alleged that independent candidate Rajiv Yadav was leading until the first three rounds, but the trends changed later. He also alleged that he boycotted the counting and accused the police of misbehaviour. These allegations could not be independently verified from the available information.
Counting was conducted at the Faculty of Commerce building of Deendayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University in Gorakhpur. A total of 16 candidates were in the fray in this constituency. The process took time because of ballot counting and the calculation of votes on the basis of preference. The BJP candidate’s lead in first-preference votes and the narrow gap with the independent candidate brought the contest into focus. For the final result, the further counting process and the official announcement remained important.
