Understand the different health risks from dog and cat bites

Dog bites may carry a higher risk of deep injury, tissue damage and serious wounds, while cats’ thin and sharp teeth can puncture the skin deeply. This can increase the risk of bacterial infection. According to the CDC, cat bites or scratches can cause infection, and infection has been reported in 20-80% of reported cat bite and scratch cases.

There can also be a risk of rabies from bites by both animals, especially when the animal is unknown, stray or sick and its vaccination status is unclear. Delaying treatment after possible exposure to rabies can be dangerous.

Immediately after a bite, it is important to wash the wound thoroughly with soap and running water. If the wound is deep, bleeding continues, redness or swelling increases, pain is severe, or fever develops, contact a doctor immediately. Doctors can decide on rabies prevention, tetanus care and treatment for infection as needed.
