CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Punjab Police Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Harcharan Singh Bhullar has been arrested by the CBI for allegedly demanding an ₹8 lakh bribe from a scrap dealer in Fatehgarh Sahib.

The case came to light after the dealer, Akash Bhatta, filed a complaint on October 11, 2025, accusing Bhullar of extorting money through a middleman named Kirshanu. A recorded WhatsApp call between Bhullar and Kirshanu revealed explicit instructions to collect the bribe, with Bhullar stating, “8 fadne ne 8” (Collect ₹8 lakh from him).

Further conversations indicated that Bhullar had been demanding recurring monthly payments, referred to as “sewa-paani,” to ensure no police action was taken against Bhatta’s business. Following the arrest, the CBI conducted searches at Bhullar’s office and residence, recovering over ₹5 crore in cash, 1.5 kg of gold, luxury watches, imported liquor, and firearms. Bhullar, a 2007-batch IPS officer and son of former Punjab DGP Mehal Singh Bhullar, is the first senior Punjab Police officer to be arrested for corruption under the AAP government.
