CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: On the occasion of World Disability Day, Madhya Pradesh Bhoj Open University organized a special program on the theme “Enhancing Leadership Skills of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.” The event was conducted by the Department of Special Education at the university.
Program Initiation
Dr. Hemant Keshwal, Head of the Department of Special Education, delivered the welcome address. He emphasized that India has one of the world’s best legal frameworks for persons with disabilities, but most of them remain out of reach of these benefits. He stressed the need to spread awareness about equality and empowerment for persons with disabilities in society.
Address by Chief Guest
The chief guest, Professor Vijendra Singh, Head of the Psychiatry Department at AIIMS Bhopal, highlighted the lack of awareness as the biggest challenge for persons with disabilities and their caregivers. He underlined the importance of awareness and rehabilitation in the treatment of mental illnesses and intellectual disabilities. Professor Singh also pointed out that 80-85% of the 15% of Indians dealing with mental illnesses do not seek treatment, which is a matter of concern.
Call for Awareness on Disability
Sandeep Rajak, Commissioner of the Department for Persons with Disabilities, stated that over 8 lakh people in Madhya Pradesh fall under the disability category, but most are unaware of government schemes. He emphasized the need for awareness programs for parents and public representatives.
International Perspective
Dr. Ashok Abhyankar, a child psychiatrist from New Zealand, shared insights on the challenges faced by persons with disabilities. He pointed out that intellectual disability is a serious issue that can be addressed with active involvement from parents and teachers. He suggested initiating online seminars and short courses for parents to improve their understanding.
Vice-Chancellor’s Address
Chairing the program, Vice-Chancellor Professor Sanjay Tiwari announced the introduction of an M.Ed. program in special education, marking it as only the second of its kind in the country. He highlighted the achievements of persons with disabilities, stating that para-athletes have outperformed able-bodied athletes in the Paralympics.
Conclusion of the Program
The Registrar, Dr. Sushil Area Manderiya, expressed gratitude in the concluding remarks. He stressed the unique abilities of persons with disabilities and the need to identify and nurture these talents.
The event saw the enthusiastic participation of university faculty, staff, and students, providing a platform for positive discussions on the empowerment of persons with disabilities and their role in society.
