CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi. Amid Delhi’s festive Diwali atmosphere, the annual Diwali market showcasing the talent, hard work and self-reliance of visually impaired people began on Friday, October 30. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated the market, organised on the premises of the Blind Relief Association. The market will continue until November 5. Visitors will be able to shop while closely seeing the skills of visually impaired artisans and trainees.
At the inaugural event, the Chief Minister appreciated the Association’s nearly 80 years of social and welfare work. She said it is the collective responsibility of society to provide visually impaired children and adults equal opportunities to live dignified and self-reliant lives. She also reiterated the government’s commitment to making public facilities and infrastructure more accessible for persons with disabilities.
The special feature of this market is that products prepared by visually impaired trainees and other artisans are displayed and offered for sale. These include handmade candles, lamps, decorative items, useful paper products and gift items. In addition, stalls of vendors from various states offer clothes, jewellery, home décor items and festival-related products.
The event is not only an opportunity for shopping, but also a platform to encourage the skills, creativity and economic self-reliance of visually impaired people. The income generated from the market supports the Association’s education, training and welfare programmes.
The Diwali market will be held daily from October 30 to November 5, from 10:30 am to 8 pm.
