New Delhi: Ahead of Diwali and Dhanteras, heavy crowds are reaching markets in the national capital Delhi for shopping. The festive rush is now visible on the roads as well. On Wednesday, severe traffic jams persisted in several major markets and on busy routes across Delhi. Because of long queues of vehicles, people took considerable time even to cover short distances.
Traffic was affected around major markets such as Sarojini Nagar, South Extension, Lajpat Nagar, Karol Bagh, Chandni Chowk, Kamla Nagar and Rajouri Garden. Vehicle movement also slowed in Kashmere Gate, Hauz Khas and Defence Colony. In north Delhi, long queues of vehicles were seen from Kamla Nagar to the Delhi University traffic signal.
The situation remained serious on Ring Road around South Extension as well. Vehicles moved intermittently on the routes from Dhaula Kuan to Ashram and from Ashram to Dhaula Kuan. Traffic pressure also remained on ITO, Lodhi Road and the Barapullah Corridor. Motorists faced difficulties between AIIMS and Sarai Kale Khan.
Because of the traffic jams, ambulances and emergency service vehicles were also affected at some places. Illegal roadside parking around South Extension was cited among the main reasons for the congestion. With no parking space available, people are parking vehicles along the roadside, narrowing the roads.
Festive shopping, rising vehicular pressure and restrictions imposed for pollution control have increased the challenge for traffic management. People are being advised to use the Metro and public transport instead of private vehicles to reach markets, and to park only at designated parking sites.
