New Delhi: As the festival of Deepawali draws closer, shopping enthusiasm in Delhi-NCR markets has reached its peak. The impact of crowds thronging major markets is now visible on the roads as well. On Tuesday evening, long queues of vehicles built up in several parts of the capital. On many routes, vehicles crawled for hours, causing major inconvenience to office-goers, traders and regular commuters.
Traffic pressure increased sharply around major markets such as Sarojini Nagar, South Extension, Lajpat Nagar, Karol Bagh, Kamla Nagar, Chandni Chowk and Rajouri Garden. Vehicular movement was also affected in Kashmiri Gate, Hauz Khas and Defence Colony. Long queues of cars, buses, autos and two-wheelers were seen at ITO, Dhaula Kuan and South Extension.
In north Delhi, congestion persisted from Kamla Nagar to the Delhi University red light. Vehicles also moved slowly near Kohat Enclave in Pitampura and around Lajpat Nagar and Vinoba Puri on Ring Road. The NH-48 stretch from Gurugram to Dhaula Kuan also saw heavy pressure. Commuters faced a long wait on the Barapullah corridor and between AIIMS and Sarai Kale Khan.
Along with festive shopping and peak hours, unauthorised parking and vehicle breakdowns also affected traffic management. There are concerns that continuous congestion may also affect efforts to control pollution. Traffic is likely to be affected on Vikas Marg from 3 pm to 5:30 pm on Wednesday due to a proposed foot march.
