CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Amid statements over the chief minister’s post in Karnataka and the Congress leadership, a remark by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has drawn attention. Referring to Rahul Gandhi, Shivakumar said the Congress leadership had played a role in making him chief minister. After his statement, political circles began interpreting its meaning. Shivakumar later issued a clarification, seeking to explain the context of his remarks.
The chief minister’s post has often been the subject of political discussion in Karnataka, with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar at the centre of leadership-related speculation from time to time. Amid talk within the Congress about power-sharing and a possible future change in leadership, statements by party leaders are closely watched. Shivakumar’s latest comment is also being viewed against this political backdrop.
Shivakumar came to Rahul Gandhi’s defence while clarifying a viral video. In a video that surfaced during a Congress protest in Delhi, Rahul Gandhi was seen moving ahead through a group of people. BJP leaders questioned Rahul Gandhi’s conduct over the video and linked it to an alleged insult of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. Rejecting the allegations, Shivakumar said Rahul Gandhi had asked him to move towards the bus that was part of the protest. Defending the Congress leader’s conduct, he praised Rahul Gandhi’s human sensitivity and leadership ability.
Responding to the BJP’s criticism, Shivakumar said the incident was being presented in the wrong context. He expressed confidence in his relationship with Rahul Gandhi and in the Congress leadership. His statement was aimed at answering questions being raised over the video.
The chief minister’s post and Congress leadership in Karnataka have been discussed politically in the past as well. In this context, Shivakumar’s remarks are also being seen as an attempt to project unity within the party. However, before drawing conclusions about anyone’s intentions or the entire sequence of events on the basis of a viral video, it is important to understand the full context.
