CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Do Not Ignore Persistent Constipation, Know These Rectal Cancer Signs
New Delhi. Constipation is a common problem and is often caused by diet, lack of water or reduced physical activity. But if constipation persists for a long time, bowel habits change or blood is seen in the stool, it should not be dismissed as a routine problem. Such symptoms can sometimes be linked to rectal cancer, or cancer of the rectum. However, constipation alone does not mean cancer.
What did the AIIMS doctor say? According to Aaj Tak’s report dated October 24, 2026, Dr. M.D. Ray, professor in the Department of Surgical Oncology at AIIMS New Delhi, said prolonged constipation can cause piles in some people. Blood can also appear in rectal cancer, which people often mistake for piles. According to doctors, piles and rectal cancer are different conditions. Piles do not turn into cancer, but having piles does not completely rule out the possibility of cancer. Therefore, if there is blood in the stool, it is important to consult a doctor for examination.
Key symptoms of rectal cancer: Not everyone with rectal cancer has the same symptoms. In some people, there may be no clear symptoms in the early stages. Possible signs include blood in the stool or during bowel movement; constipation or diarrhoea that persists for a long time; continued changes in bowel habits; abdominal pain, cramps or discomfort; a feeling that the bowel has not emptied even after passing stool; weight loss without any clear reason; weakness, fatigue or low blood levels, meaning anaemia. These symptoms may have other causes as well, but if they persist, medical examination is necessary.
When should it be considered a warning sign? If constipation has continued for a long time and is accompanied by blood in the stool, weight loss, persistent abdominal discomfort or symptoms such as anaemia, contact a doctor soon. It is not appropriate to keep treating blood in the stool at home by assuming it is only piles. The report, citing Dr. Nitesh Rohatgi, principal director at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, said persistent changes in bowel habits should not be ignored. If rectal cancer is detected in time, treatment prospects may improve.
Why are prevention and testing important? Drinking enough water, eating fibre-rich food and doing regular physical activity can help relieve constipation. But if the problem persists despite these measures or other warning signs appear, do not rely only on home remedies. Depending on the need, doctors may recommend tests such as a physical examination, stool test, endoscopy or colonoscopy. Which test is required depends on a person’s age, symptoms and medical history.
