Doctors remove magnet from child’s windpipe, providing relief without surgery
CNN Central News and Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News / Agencies, Bhopal:
Doctors in Kolkata achieved a rare medical success by removing a large magnet lodged in a child’s windpipe without surgery. For this, the doctors used a small magnet measuring just 3 millimetres. After the large magnet was safely removed through a complex procedure, the child’s condition was reported to have improved.
According to information, the child had accidentally swallowed a magnetic object, which became lodged in the windpipe. This caused difficulty in breathing. Family members took the child to hospital, where an examination found that a magnet was stuck in the windpipe. In such a situation, bronchoscopy or surgery may generally be required, as a foreign object lodged in the windpipe can create serious risk.
The team of doctors adopted a special technique instead of conventional surgery. With the help of a small 3-millimetre magnet, they attracted the larger magnet lodged in the windpipe towards it and carefully removed it. During the procedure, special attention was paid to avoiding damage to the surrounding sensitive tissues.
According to medical experts, such a technique can prove useful in selected circumstances, but it is used only after considering the patient’s condition and the nature of the lodged object. Doctors advised parents to keep small magnets, batteries and other dangerous objects out of children’s reach.
