CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Health Department of Bhopal organized a half-day workshop at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) under the National Rabies Control Program and the National Snakebite Prevention and Control Program. The workshop was attended by doctors from government and private healthcare institutions, community health officers, and officials from the Municipal Corporation and Forest Department.
The event was held at the Kautilya Bhavan in the academic block of AIIMS, where subject experts from AIIMS provided insights on rabies and snakebite. The workshop was addressed by AIIMS officials and Bhopal’s Chief Medical and Health Officer, Prabhakar Tiwari. Training was provided by Professor Seema P. Mahant from the Department of Medicine, Associate Professor Pankaj Prasad from Community Medicine, and Assistant Professor Krishna Kumar from the Department of Surgery.
The training covered various aspects, including the epidemiology of rabies, post-exposure prophylaxis, anti-rabies vaccines, surgical management of animal bite wounds, diagnosis, and clinical management of rabies cases. Protocols for prevention and treatment of snakebites were also discussed. Participants were advised on the importance of educating patients to avoid superstitions. The initial response time after a snakebite is critical, and delaying medical attention by relying on home remedies or superstitious practices can be fatal. Therefore, prompt consultation with a doctor is essential.
The training emphasized that, after a snake or dog bite, it is necessary to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility. The affected area should not be tied or moved. In case of a dog bite, the wound should be washed with soap and running water, and a doctor should be consulted immediately.
On this occasion, Bhopal’s Chief Medical and Health Officer, Prabhakar Tiwari, stated that rabies is a deadly disease, but it can be prevented with a vaccine, which is available free of charge at government hospitals. Treatment for dog and snake bites is also provided free of cost at government health institutions. All government health facilities in Bhopal ensure adherence to protocols for dog bites, snake bites, and rabies prophylaxis.
