CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The growing use of artificial intelligence for health-related advice is prompting doctors to warn against relying on AI tools for self-diagnosis, medical tests and medication without professional consultation. A report from Raipur highlights cases in which people have used chatbots to decide which tests to undergo and which medicines to take.
According to the report, some people are seeking AI advice for blood tests, X-rays, CT scans and even biopsies after interpreting their symptoms. Doctors have cautioned that symptoms alone may not be enough to determine a disease or the appropriate diagnostic procedure.
The report also highlights instances of people taking painkillers and antibiotics after consulting AI tools. Doctors said inappropriate medication can cause side effects, drug interactions and other complications. Unnecessary antibiotic use can also contribute to antimicrobial resistance.
In one reported case, a young man with painless lumps sought AI-based advice and was directed toward a biopsy after a possible cancer concern. Doctors later determined that a biopsy was not required. Another case involved a student who reportedly took painkillers and antibiotics after consulting AI and subsequently experienced dizziness.
Doctors quoted in the report stressed that AI can provide general health information but should not replace clinical examination, diagnosis or treatment prescribed by qualified medical professionals.
The growing use of AI in healthcare makes it important for users to verify health information with doctors, particularly before undergoing medical procedures or taking prescription medicines.
