CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Does PCOS cause breast cancer? Know what doctors say
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal problem among women and can be associated with irregular menstruation, acne, weight gain and difficulty in conceiving. A frequent question about this condition is whether PCOS increases the risk of breast cancer. According to experts, having PCOS does not mean that a woman will definitely develop breast cancer. Other health factors also need to be considered to understand any possible link between the two.
What is PCOS? PCOS is a hormonal and metabolic condition in which the level of androgen hormones in a woman’s body may increase and ovulation can be affected. This can lead to problems such as irregular periods, excess facial hair, acne and difficulty in conceiving. Insulin resistance is also seen in some women, which can increase the risk of type-2 diabetes.
What is the link between PCOS and breast cancer? Research findings on the relationship between PCOS and breast cancer have not been uniform. Current scientific evidence does not establish that PCOS directly causes breast cancer. Some studies have discussed possible changes in risk, but it would not be correct to conclude on that basis that PCOS is certain to cause breast cancer.
The risk of breast cancer depends on several factors, including age, family history of the disease, certain genetic changes, alcohol consumption, physical activity, weight and reproductive factors. Obesity and metabolic health linked to PCOS may also be important while assessing overall risk.
Which symptoms should not be ignored? If symptoms such as a new lump in the breast, changes in breast size or skin, inward turning of the nipple, unusual nipple discharge or a lump in the armpit appear, a doctor should be consulted for examination. These symptoms do not always mean cancer, but they need to be checked. The absence of pain alone is also not a guarantee that there is no problem.
How can women take care of their health? In PCOS, regular medical consultation, a balanced diet, physical activity, adequate sleep and maintaining a healthy weight can be useful. If periods remain irregular for a long time or other symptoms are present, a gynaecologist should be consulted. Breast cancer screening is decided according to age, family history and personal risk.
An important message for every woman: It is not scientifically appropriate to consider PCOS a direct cause of breast cancer. However, proper management of health problems linked to PCOS and timely medical advice for any new breast changes are important. Discussing medical history with a doctor is the best way to understand individual risk.
