CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal : Experts at AIIMS Bhopal have highlighted urinary tract infections (UTIs) as a common yet serious health issue. According to specialists, UTIs occur more frequently in women and can become severe if not treated on time. Studies indicate that more than half of all women experience at least one UTI in their lifetime, and recurrent infections are also common.
Doctors explained that factors such as a shorter urinary tract, hormonal changes, pregnancy, and poor hygiene increase the risk of infection in women. Additionally, insufficient water intake, improper toilet habits, and uncontrolled diabetes can further contribute to the condition.
To prevent UTIs, experts recommend simple measures such as drinking adequate water, maintaining personal hygiene, emptying the bladder after sexual activity, and wearing loose cotton clothing. Symptoms like burning during urination, frequent urination, or lower abdominal pain should prompt immediate consultation with a doctor.
AIIMS Bhopal physicians warned that using antibiotics without proper medical advice can be dangerous. Holding urine for long periods and relying solely on home remedies are also risky. In cases of recurrent infections, investigations may be needed to identify underlying causes such as kidney stones, diabetes, or other health conditions.
Experts emphasized that misuse of antibiotics is causing bacterial resistance, making standard medications ineffective and forcing patients to rely on costly or stronger drugs. By adopting a proper lifestyle and using medications responsibly, individuals can protect themselves from both UTIs and antibiotic resistance.
