Students staged a strong protest after a worm was allegedly found in food served on Monday night at the mess of Alaknanda Girls’ Hostel at Doon University. The students expressed anger over the quality of food and cleanliness, and raised slogans against the university administration.
As the matter escalated, a large number of students gathered on the university campus and later reached outside the Vice-Chancellor’s residence. The students demanded an inquiry into the mess arrangements, assurances on food quality, and action against those responsible for the alleged negligence. Police and the university’s Chief Proctor also reached the spot and tried to control the situation by speaking with the students. According to reports, some students alleged that complaints had earlier been made about the quality of food served in the mess. They said students living in the hostel pay fees for food and other facilities, and therefore there should be no compromise on the hygiene and quality of meals.
Doon University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Surekha Dangwal said complaints related to the mess had been received earlier as well, and the officials concerned had been instructed to resolve the problem. She said action would be taken against the mess operator if the complaint was found to be correct. The university administration has begun an inquiry into the matter. The situation is currently calm after the protest.
