CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Many people who take medicines daily take two tablets together in the evening if they forget their morning dose. According to experts, taking a double dose without medical advice to make up for a missed dose can be harmful. Narendra Sharma of the pharmacy department at District MMG Hospital, Ghaziabad, has also advised against taking two doses together in such a situation.
Extra doses can increase risks, especially in medicines for blood pressure, diabetes and blood thinning. A double dose may cause blood sugar to fall too low, lead to changes in blood pressure, and result in dizziness, anxiety or fainting. An additional dose of some blood-thinning medicines may also increase the risk of bleeding. In some cases, taking too much medicine can raise the risk of stomach pain, vomiting and drug toxicity.
However, the rule for a missed dose is not the same for every medicine. As general guidance, some medicines can be taken as soon as they are remembered if the next dose is not due soon, while the missed dose may need to be skipped if the next dose is close. Therefore, the instructions on the medicine packet and the advice of a doctor or pharmacist should be given priority.
To avoid forgetting medicines, take them at a fixed time every day and use a mobile alarm or medicine reminder system. If a double dose has been taken by mistake, especially of a blood thinner or diabetes medicine, it is advisable to contact a doctor or pharmacist immediately instead of waiting for symptoms to appear.
