CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Senior Indian biomedical research scientist Professor Dr GP Talwar has completed 100 years of age. A special ceremony was held in his honour at AIIMS Delhi, attended by scientists, researchers and his former students. Dr Talwar was among the early founding faculty members of AIIMS and established the Department of Biochemistry at the institute. He is counted among the leading scientists of Indian immunology.

Dr Talwar’s most widely known scientific contribution is the development of a Mycobacterium indicus pranii (MIP)-based vaccine against leprosy. The vaccine was earlier known as Mycobacterium w. Its aim was to activate the patient’s immune response more effectively, rather than directly killing the bacteria. In scientific studies, it was used as adjunct immunotherapy alongside the standard treatment for leprosy.

Dr Talwar also contributed to the establishment of the ICMR-WHO Research and Training Centre at AIIMS in 1969. Later, he was associated with the development of the National Institute of Immunology. Several researchers trained under his guidance went on to take up important roles in scientific institutions and the biotech sector in India and abroad. The Government of India has honoured him with the Padma Bhushan for his scientific contributions. Even at the age of 100, his continued engagement with science and research is being seen as a defining feature of his long scientific journey.
