CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Puducherry-based nephrologist and East Coast Hospitals Founder-Chairman Dr. N. Murugesan has introduced “Blue Nephrology,” a prevention-focused approach that seeks to identify and address metabolic and lifestyle risks before they develop into serious kidney disease.
The concept forms part of the Blue India Movement, which draws inspiration from the world’s Blue Zones and focuses on healthier ageing and disease prevention. Blue Nephrology proposes shifting attention beyond treating established kidney disease towards earlier risk factors such as insulin resistance, diabetes, hypertension and excessive sodium intake.
As part of this prevention-oriented approach, the Dr. Blue India Foundation, established by Dr. Murugesan in Puducherry in 2025, is undertaking community-level initiatives. One such programme involves a philanthropic initiative aimed at providing one lakh free insulin tests to help identify metabolic risks among people who may not yet have noticeable symptoms.
Dr. Murugesan has spent more than four decades working in nephrology and has contributed to the development of kidney-care services in Puducherry. The Indian Journal of Nephrology records him as Puducherry’s first qualified nephrologist in 1987 and notes his role in initiating the region’s first kidney transplantation programme at the Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital and Postgraduate Institute in 2006.
The Blue Nephrology approach also emphasises the relationship between kidney health and wider metabolic and cardiovascular health. By focusing on risk identification, healthier lifestyles and early intervention, the initiative aims to encourage people to address potential health problems before they progress to advanced kidney disease.
The initiative represents a prevention-first approach to nephrology, with an emphasis on early detection and community awareness alongside conventional treatment and tertiary kidney care.
