CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: A one-day workshop on Ethical Aspects in Biomedical and Health Research was organized at Bhopal Memorial Hospital & Research Centre (BMHRC), Bhopal. The aim of the program was to familiarize researchers with the importance of ethical standards and raise awareness about safe, responsible, and transparent research practices.

The workshop was attended by 151 researchers from 33 institutions across the country, including 38 members of ethics committees. The chief guest, Dr. Roli Mathur, Head of the Bioethics Unit at the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), stated during the inaugural session that the ethics committee serves not as a barrier but as a “shield of protection” for researchers. She explained that if researchers incorporate ethical guidelines from the beginning of their study, the approval process becomes smoother, and the quality of research improves.

Manisha Srivastava, In-Charge Director of BMHRC, emphasized that ethics are mandatory in biomedical research, and adherence to them can prevent serious consequences. Dharmesh Kumar Lal (ICMR) stressed the importance of providing training and guidance to researchers to ensure that all ethical rules are followed correctly, from project proposal to implementation.

Participants were provided information about consent procedures, participant safety, government regulations, and the role of ethics committees. Special attention was highlighted for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and marginalized populations. Dr. Roli Mathur also noted that India is a global leader in the field of ethics. Approximately 50 percent of ethics committee members come from external institutions, and ordinary citizens are also included to ensure impartiality and independent decision-making.
